The short version88 words
An SVG for laser cutting is a drawing of closed shapes that your laser app reads as cut, score or engrave paths, a layer for each color. A traced picture usually stacks its shapes, one on another: where they overlap, a laser that engraves each color as its own layer burns twice, or leaves a hole within one layer. To make one, convert the picture and download VecSnap's cut-ready SVG, where every area is one piece, then import it in LightBurn, xTool Creative Space or the Glowforge app.

02Engraved twice
Why does my laser engrave some areas twice, or leave holes?
A layer for each color burns 138% more area than the drawing has.
Every area one piece: each color engraves once.
Each file is drawn with every shape at half strength, as a laser engraving each color on its own layer burns it: where two shapes sit on each other, the burn is darker. The shares are measured on the files.

Yes: LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and the Glowforge app read an SVG's closed shapes as paths to cut, score or engrave. The exception is a picture saved as an SVG: it holds pixels, which a laser can only engrave.
An SVG for logos, lettering and anything you also cut: its edges stay sharp at any size and each color is a layer. A PNG for a photo or soft shading, engraved as a picture; a laser cannot cut one.
Choose File, then Import, or drag the file onto LightBurn. Each color comes in as a layer; set it to Line to cut or score, or Fill to engrave.
An SVG for LightBurn, xTool or the Glowforge app, which read its colors as layers or steps. A DXF for a CNC or a CAD program, in millimeters or inches; the Glowforge app opens a DXF for Premium members only.
An SVG measures in pixels, 96 to the inch, so a picture 960 pixels wide comes in 10 inches wide. LightBurn reads it so with its SVG import set to Inkscape, 96 DPI; set to Illustrator, 72 DPI, it comes in a third larger. Then scale it to the size you cut.
Not well: a photo is shades, and an SVG of flat colors keeps only a few of them. Engrave the photo itself as a picture, and keep SVGs for logos, signs and lettering.
A trace follows both edges of every line, so each line comes back as a thin shape with two outlines. A line drawing needs a center-line trace, which LightBurn has; VecSnap draws filled shapes only.
Yes: Tools, then Trace Image. It traces the parts of a picture within one brightness range as one group of shapes, so a logo of several colors comes back as one color to sort by hand.
xTool Creative Space does not read text inside an SVG. VecSnap's cut-ready file draws every letter as shapes, so none is left out.
VecSnap converts and previews for free; keeping the file costs one credit, with the cut-ready SVG, the DXF and every other format in it.
