A sticker border, ready to cut.

How to add a white sticker border to a picture: as an offset in Cricut Design Space, Illustrator or Inkscape, or in one step on the drawing itself, with a smooth cut line your cutter or print shop can follow.

A sticker border is a white edge a few millimeters wide around a drawing, and its outer line is where the sticker is cut. In Cricut Design Space, Illustrator or Inkscape, you make it as an offset of the drawing's outline, filled white and laid behind it. VecSnap draws your picture as shapes, then adds the border in one step, round at every corner, so its cut line is one smooth curve instead of the stair steps of a traced PNG.

What it is

What is a sticker border?

A white edge a few millimeters wide, drawn behind the picture. Its outer line is where the sticker is cut, so the blade never touches the drawing.

A die-cut sticker follows its drawing's shape, so its cut line is an outline too: the border's. Wider, the sticker is easier to cut and peel; thinner, it hugs the drawing.

How do I add a sticker border in Cricut, Illustrator or Inkscape?

Each one grows a copy of the drawing's outline outward, an offset, which you fill white and lay behind the drawing. The names differ; the result is the same.
  • Cricut Design Space

    The command
Offset: a slider or a typed distance; Weld Offsets joins the outlines of everything selected
    Then
Color the offset white, then Flatten it with the picture to Print Then Cut
  • Illustrator

    The command
Offset Path, with round corners; unite separate pieces first with Pathfinder
    Then
Fill it white and send it behind the drawing
  • Inkscape

    The command
Path, then Outset, Dynamic Offset or Linked Offset
    Then
Fill it white and lower it to the bottom

In one step

How do I add a sticker border to a picture in one step?

Let VecSnap draw the picture as shapes, pin its outer shape and choose Sticker border: a white edge of the width you choose, round at every corner, laid behind the drawing. It comes with unlocking the image, in every file you download.

Drop your sticker. Get its SVG.

  1. Drop the picture: a sticker or a logo drawn with an outline around it.
  2. VecSnap draws it as shapes. Unlock it, pin its outer shape, then choose Sticker border.
  3. Choose the width, then download: the border and its cut line are in every file.

Smooth cut

Why is my sticker's cut line jagged?

Because the border grows from the picture's own edge. From a PNG, that edge is a staircase of pixels, and the offset copies every step. Drawn as shapes first, the drawing's edge is a curve, and so is its border.

Each anchor point is a turn the blade follows: traced by potrace, the tracer inside Inkscape, the edge turns at every step of its pixels; drawn as shapes, only where the drawing does.

How wide

How wide should a sticker border be?

Wide enough for the blade to miss the drawing: Sticker Mule asked for at least a sixteenth of an inch, about 1.6 millimeters. Wider is easier to cut and to peel; thinner hugs the drawing.
  • Sticker Mule

    Width
    At least 1/16 inch
    Why
The smallest border its die-cut stickers took, in its cut line guide
  • Cricut

    Width
    Up to 1 inch
    Why
The largest offset Design Space makes, from every edge
  • VecSnap

    Width
Up to a tenth of the picture's longer side
    Why
The Sticker border slider's whole range; it opens at a quarter of it

Separate pieces

Can a picture in separate pieces get one sticker border?

VecSnap borders one shape at a time. A drawing with an outline around it gets its whole border in one step; a drawing in separate pieces gets it around the piece you pin. In Cricut, Weld Offsets joins the pieces' outlines; in Illustrator, Pathfinder unites the pieces first.

Which file

Which file for a Cricut, a print shop or a cutting machine?

The border is a shape of the file, so it is in every download. Choose the one your next step reads.
  • Cricut Print Then CutPNG

    What you get
The sticker as a picture, at the size you print it
  • A print shop's die-cut stickersPDF

    What you get
The drawing and its border as shapes; ask the shop how it marks a cut line
  • A cutting machine, in vinylCut-ready SVG

    What you get
Each color a piece of its own to cut and layer, the white border one of them

Every download carries the border: it is one of the file's shapes.

Questions

Sticker borders, answered.

Sources

No. A border keeps the blade off the drawing and makes the sticker easier to peel. Without one, cut on the drawing's own edge and extend its colors a little past the cut, a bleed, so a slightly off cut shows no paper.
