Drawing to SVG, paper and all.

To turn a drawing into an SVG, photograph it from straight above in daylight, or scan it, and drop the picture on VecSnap. The paper becomes one ground: its shadows and grain, thousands of slightly different whites, come back as a single color, and each inked shape as a curve you can edit and recolor. Marker and ink work best; a pencil sketch wants single lines, which VecSnap does not draw yet.

The paper

What happens to the paper?

It becomes one ground. A scan or a photo of paper holds thousands of whites, a shade apart from light and grain; VecSnap reads them as one color and draws only what the ink made.

In “Every color”, each distinct color takes its own hue, ranked by how much of the file it covers: one rule for both files, worked out in your browser from the files themselves.

Before you drop it

How do I photograph a drawing for an SVG?

From straight above, in daylight, with the paper filling the frame. Any phone camera is enough.
  • Straight above

Hold the phone flat over the page, so circles stay round and straight lines stay straight.

  • Daylight, no shadow

Your own shadow across the page reads as a gray shape; light from a window beside you leaves none.

  • Paper fills the frame

Keep the table and the sketchbook's edge out of the picture, or crop them before you drop it.

  • Marker or ink

Closed, dark lines and flat fills come back as clean shapes. Pencil is too faint and too fine to keep.

Its lines come back as thin filled shapes, each with an inside and an outside edge, and faint pencil may break up. Go over the lines in marker first. Single-line output, for a pen or a plotter, is not something VecSnap draws yet.
