BMP to SVG converter

BMP to SVG, JPG marks gone.

Drop in a BMP, the bitmap Windows and Paint save. VecSnap checks its pixels for the marks of a JPG it once was, treats a picture that has them as that JPG, and redraws it as curves and flat colors.

To convert a BMP to SVG, drop it on VecSnap. A BMP saves every pixel exactly as it is, so it also keeps what happened to the picture before: a logo copied from a web page and pasted into Paint carries the blocky marks of the JPG it was. VecSnap looks for those marks in the pixels, handles a picture that has them as that JPG, and redraws the picture as flat shapes and curves. Converting and previewing are free.

A BMP's past

Was my BMP a JPG before?

A BMP does not compress, but it keeps whatever it was given. A JPG cuts a picture into blocks of eight by eight pixels, and pasted into Paint those blocks stay. VecSnap reads them in the pixels: no setting, no guess.

    Once a JPG

Saved as a JPG first, then as a BMP: the blocky marks and smudged colors came along.

VecSnap estimates the quality the JPG had and cleans its marks before drawing. This page's file was cleaned.

  • No JPG marks

Drawn and saved straight to BMP, or flat enough that a JPG left no trace.

Drawn from its pixels as they are.

How to tell: a JPG's eight-pixel grid, in the pixels.

  • BMUncompressedA BMP stores each pixel in full, which is why it is large. Nothing is lost in the BMP itself.
  • 8-bitA paletteAn older BMP may hold 256 colors or fewer. It is brought to full color before it is drawn.

What you get

What a good BMP to SVG file keeps

  • Clean outlines

Edges come back as smooth curves and straight lines, free of the square steps of the bitmap.

  • True colors

The colors the picture had, each as one flat fill, the smudges a JPG left cleaned away.

  • A small file

Where the BMP stored every pixel, the SVG stores a few shapes and their points.

  • Parts you can find

Shapes of one color sit in one group, so each part of the logo is easy to select.
